Cook is not the first Travelpig to visit Cerne Abbas - Hudson was the first to do so back in April 2002. The Cerne Giant - the image of a huge giant (in more ways than one) carved into the hillside, is still just as impressive as Hudson stated. Not much is known about the origins, or even the age, of the carving. Some people say that the giant is supposed to be Hercules - and scientists believe that there might once have been the outline of a cloth or skin draped over the Giant's left arm...but who knows - it's cool anyway. You can climb the hill (which is steeper than it looks!) and walk around the perimeter of the carving, but it itself is fenced off. That doesn't stop some people from getting in, but this little piggy doesn't like to see the destruction of sites like this by people not following the rules! |
